A mobile hospital from North Carolina is treating patients in Mississippi this week.

North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services says the National Mobile Disaster Hospital deployed from North Carolina on May 1st to Louisville, Miss.; and opened Monday to patients.

The mobile hospital deployed after an EF4 tornado struck the area on April 28th, destroying or damaging eight out of nine medical offices and the Winston County 41-bed hospital.

The mobile hospital site will be the temporary medical care center for the Louisville community of 19,000 people. It’s expected to be in operation for 12 to 18 months while the medical facilities that were damaged are being reconstructed.

"We are proud that the Mobile Hospital maintained by DHHS has opened its doors and is meeting the critical medical needs of the Louisvillee community while recovery efforts continue," said DHHS Secretary Aldona Wos.  "North Carolina is happy that we are able to lend a hand to our neighbors in Mississippi during their time of need."

A dozen small-sized buildings were moved onto the Mobile Disaster Hospital site to serve as administrative offices and out-patient clinics. They will be used with the emergency department and wards, pharmacy, central supply and x-ray unit brought to the site by 18 FEMA tractor-trailers from a storage facility in Mocksville, N.C.

The MDH includes a 21 bed Emergency Department, 12 bed Intensive Care Unit, three operating rooms, a six bed pre/post op service and a rapid response unit.

The MDH deployment was organized by Dr. Lew stringer, MDH Project manager, and a team from the N.C. Office of Emergency Medical Services.  The North Carolina Baptist Men were set-up partners.
