4th Annual ‘Letterland Day’ held at Sadie Saulter Educational Center

Posted: Updated:
Pre-K students of Pitt County are learning important reading concepts with a creative and fun twist.

Today preschool students got dressed up as their favorite character from the reading program ‘Letterland’ and paraded through the halls of the Sadie Saulter Educational Center.

Pitt County Schools tell 9 On Your Side this is one of the ways they are tackling a growing problem of kids not learning to read. The letter land program is working to help students learn letter sounds in a fun new way. The program associates phonic sounds with characters and images to help kids match letters to sounds.

"It’s a very great cueing system that when the kids see the characters they immediately respond but that sound. For example on I'm quarrelsome queen and the kids know that my sound is qu-wa" said Valerie Neal, The Queen of Letterland.

Today's parade creates a party like atmosphere aimed at getting all young students excited about reading.  Autistic students from Pitt County’s  H.U.G.S. program also participated in today’s fun.
