COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The season ended sooner than they wanted, but after another state semifinal run, the Columbus Lady Blue Devil soccer team wins the latest Headquarter Nissan Athletes of the Week award.

The 5-AAAA champs fell in the semifinals to a tough Veterans team by the heartbreaking score of 1-0.

“This has been my favorite team,” said senior Taylor Schuler. “I love all these girls. The coaches have been my favorite, and actually, this season has been my favorite because I’ve met all these girls and I’ve gotten to spend time with them. I couldn’t ask for a better outcome.”

The upperclassmen took their role seriously.

“I really do love my team so much,” said senior Nada Elrhalami. “Being a senior was a big thing for me this year because I got to lead the team, in a sense. We all did, really. It was cut short, but I was so blessed to have played with these girls.”

Despite coming up short, head coach Rusty Oliver knows this class and this team has laid the foundation for years to come.

“Having that mix of old and new players gives me confidence,” Oliver said. “We’re going to continue that tradition of excellence over the next ten, twenty years, however long Columbus High is around.”
