9 On Your Side hits the water with boating officers

Posted: Updated:
Memorial Day weekend usually marks the start of the summer boating season. As more boaters hit the water in eastern North Carolina, the North Carolina

Wildlife Resource Commission is hard at work trying to keep the water safe.
“Scanning, making sure the registration is good, the numbers are good. If there in a wake zone, making sure they’re not violating a no wake zone. If a child's on board, making sure they have life jacket on,” said North Carolina Wildlife Commission Master Officer William Cain.

Cain says the safety checks are essential to preventing accidents and injuries.

In 2013, North Carolina’s 139 boating accidents ranked fifth in the nation. Cain says this year in Beaufort County they have already reached the summer season average of two boating accidents.

Cain says boating patrols are not just about catching impaired drivers, but about educating the public about boating rules and regulations.

The NC Wildlife Commission offers free boating safety classes. Click here for more information about those classes.
