Coaches propose early signing day

DESTIN, Fla. -

The hot topic on day two of the SEC meetings in Destin, Fla., was recruiting reformation.

The league has agreed on an early signing day to take place on the Monday after Thanksgiving, and that would be presented to the Collegiate Commissioners Association.

Under the proposed system, only players that had not taken any official visits would be eligible to sign. Any player wishing to take his five full official visits would have to wait to the tradition signing day in February.

“I think the thinking is, there’s a decent chance this could happen,” said Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn. “Each conference has different ways of looking at it, different plans, but our thinking as a conference was not changing the current recruiting schedule, because once you do that, you open up a lot of different things.”

That seems to be a reaction to the ACC’s proposal to create an early signing period in August. That was met with near-universal disapproval in the SEC—save for Arkansas’s Bret Bielema—because it would create a near year-round recruiting season.

“One of the other leagues proposed August 1,” said Georgia head coach Mark Richt told the Associated Press. “We think that would be crazy. We think there would be no summer for anybody, no sanity for anybody.”
