New additions proposed for Columbus State

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Columbus State University could be preparing for some major upgrades. University officials are hoping the Georgia Legislature approves nearly $20 million in funding.

"This is a first step, but a very important step," said John Lester.

Columbus State University could soon be seeing some major additions to campus. University officials say if nearly $20 million in state funding is approved, they will start by adding a new laboratory to Lenior Hall.

"We did an analysis of campus a few years ago. How much classroom space? How much office space? How much lab space? The biggest deficiency Columbus State has is a need for laboratory space.

John Lester says the new space would continue to attract quality students to the University by providing more state of the art equipment.

"We have the faculty to support the academics. We have to be able to provide the infrastructure too," said Lester.

The second big addition would be a Learning Commons attached to the existing library on campus.

"It'll be a place for tutoring, studying, bringing all sorts of those student organization support services together in one place," said Lester.

Officials say the last major classroom building project was in 2001. That's when they received funding to build the Center for Commerce and Technology.

"The legislative delegation has been fantastic as far as supporting these. We're going to call on them again, but I have no doubt they would be in favor because they are very pro Columbus State," said Lester.

If approved by the Georgia Legislature, the funding would require a private match from the University. They would be expected to raise about $4 million and then the state would provide around $16 million for the projects.
