Columbus police say they have seized and shutdown multiple businesses for selling stolen property. The news came Friday morning during a news conference at Columbus police department headquarters.

“We have spearheaded a new line of focus on our investigations to find these stolen property fencers as we call them,” said Sgt. Joe Weatherford with the Columbus Police Department.

Authorities say they recently shutdown three businesses after executing multiple search warrants. Thousands of dollars worth of stolen items were recovered.

The three stores closed are:
- Lucky Food Mart, on Floyd Road
- Food Mart, also on Floyd Road
- Pyramid Food Store, on Buena Vista Road

Police say what burglars would do is steal electronics: TV’s, IPads, and phones. They would then bring them to one of the three locations and sell them here. It was a quick turnaround too. They would steal in the morning and maybe go back out that afternoon.

Gurdeep Singh, the manager of the Lucky Food Mart, was arrested for knowingly receiving stolen property.

All three stores are owned by Kulwant Singh, according to police. He has not been arrested.

“You have to take away their ability to liquidate the items. In order to do that, you have to get the owners of the businesses and the managers who are repeatedly getting charged,” Sgt.Weatherford.

And police have a message for any other stores that knowingly buy stolen goods.

“We are coming after them. We are using every resource we have to shut them down because this is one of the primary issues we have. We continue to apprehend suspects. They get released. They still have their fencers and they go back and do the same thing,” said Sgt. Weatherford.

Police couldn't put an estimate of the value of the items to come through these stores, but, they know is is multiple thousands of dollars.

Hundreds of stolen items were being stolen and then sold, police say. They commonly included electronics stolen from homes.

The case remains under investigation but authorities say the operation has been going on for years.
