DURHAM, N.C. -

A fatal single-car crash shut down a section of Martin Luther King Jr., Parkway near Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. in Durham for approximately three hours Monday morning.

Police say a 2002 Subaru Legacy driven by Franco Juan Sanchez, 33, of Durham, crashed around 3:45 a.m.

The vehicle was speeding when it went off the road to the left, went airborne, crossed multiple lanes and hit a concrete barrier before landing on the U.S. 15-501 bypass/Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway extension, according to authorities.

Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene. Edward Frye Mitchell III, 24, of Durham, was a passenger in the vehicle. Mitchell was transported to the hospital with critical injuries.

Investigators believe alcohol and speed were factors.

The road reopened at around 7:45 a.m.
