AUBURN, Ala. -

State House Speaker Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn) has claimed victory in state House District 79 race.

Hubbard won about 60% of the vote in Lee County, beating local businessman Sandy Toomer 2,931 to 1,934. Hubbard has represented the district since 1998 and has been Speaker of the House since 2010. He celebrated his victory in his home with friends and family Tuesday night.

“It's very gratifying,” said Hubbard. “I have a lot of confidence in the electorate, I’m very proud of this district and the people here and I have a lot of thanks to give over the next few weeks.”

After Sandy Toomer conceded, he called and congratulated Hubbard.

“He won fair and square” said Toomer. “I congratulated him and wished him the best.”

Both candidates say they’re glad the election is over, saying the negative and relentless attack ads surrounding the campaigns were exhausting.

“This is the toughest election I’ve ever had,” said Hubbard. “I know there was a lot of fatigue out there among the voters, they were sick and tired of the all negatives.”

Hubbard will now face Democratic candidate Shirley Scott-Harris in the November general election.
