NC lawmakers consider economic development changes

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A bill to privatize parts of the public agency that works to recruit companies and jobs to North Carolina is going to the House.

The House Commerce and Job Development Committee voted Wednesday to advance the bill.

The bill would shift the state's corporate recruiting from the Commerce Department to a private nonprofit entity that can raise money from private donors to wine and dine executives considering new factories or other opportunities. Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker says the new arrangement will put the state's recruiting efforts more on par with how the corporate world operates.

Critics say similar efforts in other states have been marred by ethics scandals and a lack of transparency about how the money is being spent.

A similar bill is under consideration in the state Senate.
