Tillis, Hagan still talk about talking NC debates

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Thom Tillis is trying to hasten debate negotiations for the fall campaign with incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan, saying he's already accepted invitations from seven media outlets and organizations.

Tillis told Hagan in a letter he'd like campaign representatives and each potential debate host to hold a meeting by the end of the month that's open to reporters and set a debate schedule.

The state House speaker says he wants at least 10 debates. Hagan also has said she wants multiple debates but didn't set a number.

Hagan spokesman Chris Hayden says her campaign received Monday's letter and is glad Tillis is committed to scheduling public debates. Hayden says a Hagan debate representative has been in touch with Tillis' representative and will discuss details soon.
