Pitt County could soon see tobacco-free parks

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Pitt County Board of Health is considering banning tobacco from public parks.

On Monday,  Greenville's city council unanimously voted to support the board's proposal to ban tobacco products and e-cigarettes from Pitt County parks.

In February, the board asked the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department if it would be interested in supporting this tobacco-free policy.  In May, The Parks and Recreation Committee voted to support the proposal. On Monday, Greenville Parks and Recreation Director, Gary Fenton, brought the resolution before the city council.
On Monday, the City of Greenville unanimously said yes to supporting  tobacco-free parks.
9 On Your Side obtained a copy of that approved resolution. According to the preliminary proposal,  all tobacco products and e-cigarettes would be prohibited at county parks.

The Board of Health presented a preliminary tobacco-free policy to its members at Tuesday board meeting. Board members will now look over the document and tweak it before their meeting in August. If the board approves the final draft,  the proposal will be presented to the Pitt County Board of Commissioners.
This isn't the first county in eastern North Carolina to  put restrictions on smoking in parks. The City of Washington and Kinston have a tobacco-free parks policy.

In the City of Washington, tobacco products are prohibited at athletic facilities during youth events.

Two years ago, the City of Kinston also adopted a tobacco-free parks policy. Under the policy, people must used designated smoking areas.

As for enforcement of this type of policies, 9 On Your Side learned park rangers usually enforce tobacco-free policies if someone comes to them to complain about a particular area. However, most city officials 9 On Your Side talked to say there is usually no fine or citation attached to violating of tobacco-free park zones.
