DESOTO, Texas, June 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- DeSoto Independent School District (ISD), TX is an urban district in South Dallas in which nearly 70% of students are economically disadvantaged. Yet a recent study commissioned by DeSoto ISD shows that students who studied online using Penda Learning scored significantly higher in Math and Science STAAR assessments than students who did not use the program.
"The students love Penda and use it every day. Students want to do the work – not a typical reaction to math and science – and their scores have improved," says Dr. JoAnn Green-Rucker, Assistant Superintendent for C&I, DeSoto ISD.
In the summer of 2013, the senior curriculum team at DeSoto ISD was looking for strategies and programs to fill gaps in math and science. At that time students were performing many grade levels below proficiency, and the district had limited resources to respond.
DeSoto ISD implemented Penda in the fall of 2013 and then commissioned this study to find out whether Penda had moved the needle in the April 2014 STARR assessments. 3,279 students were included in the study of which 1,083 were Penda Users. Penda Users were defined as students who used Penda for at least 4 Task Hours during academic year 2013–2014.
