COLUMBUS, Ga. -
A groundbreaking ceremony for the Winterfield Senior Veterans Project was held Friday. Three duplexes (6 rental units) will be constructed as homes for low income seniors and veterans.
The 1.4 million dollar development is being funded from Program Income generated from the city of Columbus' Neighborhood Stabilization Program and $400k "HOME" grant from the Georgia department of Community Affairs.
"Winterfield has always been a great neighborhood but as you can see the vacant lot has been sitting for years. There's not really anything that this property does that benefits the neighborhood at this point and so the best thing that we can do is build new housing on this site and you can't have a better occupant than seniors and veterans," said Justin Krieg, Vice Chairman board of NeighborWorks Columbus.
An additional six unit will be constructed on nearby once the initial project has been completed.
