Cary PD targeting distracted drivers

Posted: Updated:

Cary Police targeted texters and other distracted drivers Wednesday as part of its “Don’t Text and Drive” campaign.

Officers were looking on Maynard Road and Cary Parkway from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drivers were getting $100 tickets and will have to pay another $190 in court costs.

Since 2013, distracted driving has been a contributing factor to 71 crashes in Cary.

“Mobile devices today do so much more than make a simple phone call, and it’s critical to remember that the permanent damage caused by taking your eyes off the road just simply isn’t worth it,” said Lt. Steve Wilkins of the Town of Cary’s Traffic Safety Team.

It’s illegal to text and drive in North Carolina. Violating the law carries a $100 fine plus $190 in court costs.

Cary Police made 47 stops by 11 a.m. alone and pulled their first person within 10 minutes.
