Columbus police officer says he was attacked outside Lee County home

Posted: Updated:
A Columbus police officer says he was attacked and beaten at his Smiths Station home while in uniform early Tuesday morning, Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones tells News 3.

The victim told authorities that two individuals, dressed in all black, hit him from behind as he was getting ready to go to work.

The attack happened at the officer's Smiths Station home on Lee Road 404 at about 5:00 a.m. CST. The officer reported that he was getting something from his car in his garage when he heard a voice call out for "help" in his yard, Sheriff Jones said.

The officer told authorities that he walked out to see where the voice was coming from and then got hit in the back of the head with a blunt object. The men beat the officer while he was on the ground and then fled after a few seconds, the officer told authorities.

A family member took the officer to Midtown Medical Center where he was treated and released for minor injuries to the head and the arm. Authorities say the officer did not have his weapon and the men did not take anything from the officer or say anything to him.

“We're here to protect people and it's unfortunate that there are those out there who wish us harm simply for doing our job,” said Sheriff Jones.

Neighbors tell News 3 the officer's wife and one-year-old baby were inside the home at the time of the attack. They say the family have only lived in the home for a few months. Sheriff Jones tells News 3 there is rarely any crime on Lee Road 404 or the surrounding area.

There are no suspects at this time, authorities say. The victim told authorities he was unable to get a good luck at the assailants, all he knows is that they were two men wearing all black.

If you have any information about the attack, you're asked to call the Lee County Sheriff's Office at 334-749-5651.
