NC House passes student organization bill

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - The House has approved a measure giving student organizations at North Carolina college and universities the authority to determine their own leadership and missions.

The bill passed easily Wednesday and now heads to the governor.

The proposal prohibits university administrators from denying recognition, use of school facilities or funding to groups they disagree with. Student groups will have authority to resolve their own disputes and may reject candidates for leadership positions who do not  conform to the basic mission and principles of the organization.

Lawmakers voted down several amendments that proponents argued would gut the bill.

Rockingham Republican Rep. Bert Jones says the bill was necessary to protect students' First Amendment rights in an age of rampant political correctness.
