An Opelika man is under arrest after a hostage stand-off Tuesday in Lee County.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrested Brandon Ramarlo Burton, 31, of Opelika after deputies say he held his ex-girlfriend and her children hostage in her home.

Around 5 p.m. Tuesday Lee County sheriff’s deputies responded to a home in the 100 block of Lee Road 197 Smiths Station after a woman reported that her ex-boyfriend had broken into her house while she was asleep, refused to leave, and assaulted her new boyfriend with a gun.  Deputies found her current boyfriend at a nearby store suffering from a busted lip.

He told the deputies he was awaken from his sleep by Burton, who hit him repeatedly in his face and head. He then said that Burton forced him at gun point to leave his girlfriend’s house, then proceeded to follow him from the home and continued to assault him as he walked down the road.  He said after that Burton went back to his girlfriend’s house where he was holding her and her three young children hostage.

The sheriff's deputies surrounded the home and began negotiating with Burton who surrendered after a 45 minute stand-off. Burton is currently being held in the Lee County Detention Facility without bond for Unlawful Imprisonment, Burglary, Theft of Property, Assault and a parole violation.

The male victim had only minor injuries and no one else was injured.
