NC House changes on environment return to Senate

RALEIGH, N.C. -

With little debate, the House has approved changes to the state's environmental laws.

The 25-page bill was passed Thursday with provisions that include low-flow toilet regulations, isolated wetlands and inland hazard areas.

One provision would increase the size of wetlands subject to state protection, which environmentalists say could make smaller wetlands vulnerable. An amendment to reduce the size requirement and expand protections was shot down in a committee Wednesday.

Republican lawmakers praised the bill, saying it was truly was about environmental regulations and did not include unrelated provisions cobbled together.

Rep. Pricey Harrison, a Guilford County Democrat, said she thought the bill was better than the Senate's version, but said some regulations should be left to environmental experts.

The bill will now return to the Senate.
