Canes name Red Wings' Peters head coach

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The Carolina Hurricanes announced Thursday that Bill Peters has been named the team's head coach.

Ron Francis, the executive vice president and general manager, will introduce Peters during a news conference on Friday at noon in PNC Arena's Varsity Club.

Peters, 48, was an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings for the past three seasons. He worked primarily with Detroit's defensemen and penalty kill units. Before joining the Red Wings' staff, Peters was head coach of Rockford, an American Hockey League team. Peters guided Rockford to consecutive 40-win seasons and playoff appearances from 2008-2010.

Peters coached Spokane of the Western Hockey League for three seasons, leading the Chiefs to the Memorial Cup title in 2008, as winners of the Canadian Hockey League.

Peters has coached on the college level at the University of Lethbridge, serving as head coach from 2002-2005.

Peters also coached the Canada U-18 team to a gold medal in the 2008 U-18 Junior World Cup.

Carolina fired Kirk Muller in early May.

Peters will be the first head coach under Francis.
