Certain Blood Types Attract Mosquitoes

Posted: Updated:
People with the blood type O are more likely to attract mosquitoes than those with other blood types.  That’s suggested by a study cited by Smithsonian.com.

The site points to a study that found mosquitoes landed on people with Type O blood nearly twice as much than those with Type A blood.  Type B reportedly fell somewhere in the middle.

Also, those who work out a lot, are pregnant, or have had something to drink are more likely to attract the bugs.  It's reported that the reason mosquitoes find pregnant women and regular exercisers more attractive is because, in part, they have a higher body temperature. The site reports that beer can make a person more attractive, but scientists haven’t figured out exactly why.

Smithsonian says not only are mosquitoes attracted to people with higher body temperatures and certain blood types -- but also to people who wear certain colors, like black, dark blue, or red.  A medical entomologist at the University Of Florida says colors that stand out attract mosquitoes because they use vision as well as scent to locate humans and those colors might just make you easier for them to find.
