DURHAM, N.C. -

WNCN-TV accepted the award for Outstanding Newscast Tuesday from the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters for its breaking news coverage of a terrifying accident at the North Carolina State Fair.

The award is given each year to the North Carolina television station that best exemplifies the highest standard of news broadcasting.

News Director Andrea Parquet-Taylor accepted the award on behalf of the station. General Manager Doug Hamilton, and members of the WNCN team were also in attendance.

"I am honored to receive this award from the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters," Parquet-Taylor said. "The WNCN team works diligently every day to deliver on the promise of a 'Smarter' approach to news coverage. We're delighted that our industry peers recognized the effort."

The NCAB presented the award to WNCN for its coverage of an accident at the N.C. State Fair on Oct. 24, 2013, that left five people injured when a ride jolted into motion while passengers were offloading.

The newscast could not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts of WNCN's team, including:

  • Executive Producer: Seth Waggener
  • Producer: Amy Holliday
  • Director: Mike Riley
  • Anchors: Pam Saulsby and Penn Holderness
  • Reporter: Derick Waller
  • Photographer: Patrick Priest

In April 2013, WNCN earned the regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Video Newscast for its Oct. 25, 2012, investigative special "Poison in the Water." That same special also earned a Midsouth Emmy Award in January for best Evening Newscast.
