CSU Police look for thief caught on camera

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Columbus State Police are looking for a bold thief caught on camera stealing lawn equipment in the middle of the day. Last Monday around 1 in the afternoon, Columbus State Police were called to the Courtyard One dorms on University Avenue after a theft was reported. Their $300,000 in security upgrades helped catch the thief on camera.

"Most people know there are cameras on our campus," said Sergeant Brett Stanelle with the Columbus State University Police.

That didn't stop a thief last Monday afternoon. A Toyota pulled into the visitor's entrance of the complex and in a matter of minutes nearly $1,500 worth of lawn equipment was gone.

"That type of bold, brazen activity leads us to believe the individual has no connection to Columbus State University and that it may have been a crime of opportunity," said Sergeant Stanelle.

The surveillance video shows a man getting out of a Toyota sedan and helping himself to several pieces of equipment including a chain saw, weed eater, and a blower. The lawn care company was doing work on the property at the time, but wasn't near the truck.

CSU police say the suspect wasn't alone in the act.

"We do believe that there was an accomplice involved. When the suspect first pulls up to the work truck and the trailer, he's in the drivers seat. He exists the vehicle, and loads up the equipment. When he leaves the scene, he's in the passengers seat. We know there's a second person inside that vehicle that was driving," said Sergeant Brett Stanelle.

CSU police credit their recent security upgrades on catching the thief in the act.

"Some of those new upgrades and cameras worked in our favor and we were able to capture this incident and get a couple of leads," said Stanelle.

If you have any information about this crime you're asked to call Columbus State Police at 706-507-8911.
