Football season home renting becoming a new trend

Posted: Updated:
AUBURN, Ala. -  We are about two months away from the start of the college football season.

That means you need to be making your reservations for game day weekend.

There is a new trend in college towns for housing plans.

In this part of the country, thousands of fans use their vacation time for SEC football. For you to stay a couple of days in Auburn or Athens, you might need to look into renting from a homeowner near campus.

The roars of Jordan-Hare Stadium will fill the Auburn air in late August. One problem that people have on game weekends is finding a place to stay.

“There is a huge gap between the people who are coming to town in Auburn, it's between 80 and 90,000. The number of people who can be accommodated in the town is somewhere between 10-20,000,” said Chris Pesigan, co-founder of University Football Rentals.

It is one reason Chris Pesigan and his real estate office in Indiana started University Football Rentals. The idea started when they had three vacant properties around football season near Notre Dame’s campus. They went to Craigslist and put all three properties up for game weekend rent.

“We listed all three homes on the website and they booked within a month. We said shoot, we are on to something,” Pesigan said.

After seeing similar success in the Midwest, the company is expanding to the South.

Like most fan bases in the SEC, Auburn fans are going to flock to Jordan-Hare stadium in a little more than two months. What they are going to want to do, a lot of the fans, is stay in town a few extra days.

And if you own property near Jordan-Hare stadium and don't care much for football, you can make a great deal of extra money.

Pesigan- Some people are in our Notre Dame market have two homes right around the campus area and he netted more than $35,000

University Football Rentals is already in Athens, and now in Auburn. They plan to expand to more SEC cities soon.

If you're interested in renting out your home, you might have to use an online resource.

We spoke with a real estate company in Auburn who says they don’t do short term rentals for football weekends.

According to university football rentals - you need to rent your football weekend home two to three months prior to game day.

The company is having an informational happy hour at Zazu’s on Magnolia Avenue in Auburn on Thursday from 5-7pm central time.
