COLUMBUS. Ga. - Columbus Police Sergeant Craig Haggas has been released on bond after being arrested and charged with simple battery.

Muscogee County jail records show Haggas was arrested on Friday and released the same day. An incident report was not made available Saturday morning. News 3 was told we would have to speak to a supervisor in order to obtain the report.

A source close to the situation tells News 3 the charge stems from a domestic dispute in May at Haggas' home between him and his wife, Whitney Haggas. She was also arrested and charged with simple battery.

Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, the city's Director of Public Safety, confirms the arrest comes from a domestic dispute and says Haggas has been placed on administrative leave. Tomlinson referred all other details to Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren, who declined to comment any further.

Haggas has been an officer with the city for more than 20 years and has been a sergeant since 2010; he previously served as the supervisor for the Sex Crimes Unit and is now the supervisor of the Financial Crimes Unit, police personnel records show.

A call to a number listed online as Haggas' personal phone was unsuccessful. News 3 left a voicemail to offer an opportunity to comment, but has not heard back.

Whitney Haggas has also been released on bond ahead of appearance in Superior Court on a later date.
