Columbus repairman wins $500K lottery prize

Posted: Updated:

A Columbus refrigeration repairman is cooling off with a $500,000 lottery prize, Georgia Lottery announced Thursday morning.

Roy Carter, 47, won a $500,000 top prize playing the instant game Jumbo Jumbo Bucks.

“I can’t believe it,” Carter exclaimed upon claiming his prize.

An air conditioning and refrigeration repairman, the lucky winner was working when he stopped at the Money Back location on Macon Road in Columbus to purchase a soda and instant lottery ticket.

“I saw the (Instant Ticket Vending) machine and put my money in it,” he said. “I went to my truck, and there it was! It still hasn’t sunk in.”

Carter anticipates paying off bills with his winnings.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $15.3 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.6 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.3 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
