A Spring Hill woman who was found living in a feces-ridden home with 61 animals has been cited for mistreatment of animals.

Hernando County Sheriff's Office Animal Services Officers issued multiple citations to Naoma Britten for the alleged mistreatment of 34 animals. The fines totaled approximately $16,000, according to the HCSO.

HCSO deputies and animal services officers visited the home in June and initially thought there were 50 animals there. However, an investigation found that Britten actually had 61 animals on the property; 55 dogs and six cats.

All animals were removed on or before June 19 by either a Hernando County Animal Services Officer or the Suncoast Animal League.

26 dogs that were removed from the property were delivered to Hernando County Animal Services. Six additional dogs were removed to private rescues.

Each of these 34 dogs were examined by veterinarians and declared to be mistreated, according to the HCSO. One dog that was delivered to Hernando County Animal Services had to be humanely euthanized, because it was extremely ill.

Twenty one dogs were rescued by the Suncoast Animal League. Veterinary examinations on those dogs are not complete. It is expected the documentation will be received within the next several days.

When complete, documentation will be forwarded to the Animal Services Officers for review. Additional mistreatment citations are possible.

Throughout the last several weeks, the HCSO has worked with veterinarians from the Hernando County Animal Services and the Suncoast Animal League to ensure that all animals received appropriate treatment.
