Sun's out, surf's up as Atlantic Beach rejoices at Arthur's passing

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. -

With the storm clouds gone, the sun and people returned to Atlantic Beach Friday on what is traditionally one of the busiest vacation periods at the beach.

While Hurricane Arthur spoiled Thursday for many, the calm after the storm made for perfect July fourth weather.

Some people combed the beach with metal detectors to see what the storm left behind.

It certainly left behind a mess in some places, as crews worked to move sand back where it should be.

At one point, roofing material was blown across the road.

Andrew Gould said he was driving Thursday night around 11 p.m. when the debris blew over his truck, even hitting it and leaving a windshield crack.

“It’s really scary now,” Gould said. “At the time it just seemed like a little piece of tar paper or something. Now, when i see it, really realize how lucky we were.”

Across town, Gayle Carter of Raleigh spent part of her day raking the debris at her beach house.

“It looks like our area got the worst of what I’ve seen so far,” Carter said.

Carter, like many in Carteret County, woke up Friday without power.Crews worked to restore it throughout the day. Duke Energy said Friday afternoon that it expected power to be restored in most places by Friday, but that it would take until Saturday for hard-hit Carteret County.

But with the gorgeous weather on the Fourth, most people wanted to be outside – not inside – now that Arthur had passed.
