Greenville expecting big crowds for July 4th fireworks

Posted: Updated:

For the 43rd time, the Greenville Jaycees are preparing for their July 4th celebration.

Ashton Thomason is the President of the Greenville Jaycees. She's says this event is great for the community.

"I think it's important because it's a way for people to stay here in their own community and celebrate July 4th," Thomason said. "It's a fantastic thing."

The money raised from the celebration goes to support the Jaycee's charities.

Thomason says she believes crowds may be bigger this year because so many other firework celebrations were postponed due to Hurricane Arthur.

"I feel as if some people may have canceled their travel plans because they didn't know what was going to happen with Hurricane Arthur," she said. "On a good year, we can have easily 15 to about 20 thousand people here in the town commons."

July 4th has a special meaning for Vietnam Veteran Kenneth Bunch.

"All of the people who lost their lives, keep us having our freedom, our liberties. Even my best buddy got killed in Vietnam," Bunch said.

The celebration also gives local businesses a boost.

Kenneth Jenkins is the co-owner of Kern-A-Kopia Kettle Corn Company, which opened us just last August. He says events like this help his business grow.

"The people of Greenville and surrounding areas, they're just wonderful people, you know," Jenkins said. "And so just to come out here and be able to just have that opportunity to just expand customer base and just really get your business out there, this is the perfect place to do it."

The festivities will all lead up to the fireworks, which are expected to start around 9:15 p.m.
