Troup County seeking public response to property tax increase

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. -

Troup County is asking for public comment after tentatively approving a plan to raise property taxes.

All concerned citizens are invited to a public hearing on June 15 at 9a et at the Commissioners' Meeting Room, located on the first floor of the Troup County Government Service Center at 100 Ridley Avenue.

The Troup County Board of Commissioners has already tentatively adopted a millage rate, which will increase property taxes by 4.61 percent. The current M&O millage rate of 10.990 would remain unchanged.

In November, the Brookings Institution published an interactive map comparing property tax values across the country. Using data collected between 2007 and 2011, the report found the average resident paid $1,162 in property taxes in Troup County. The report estimated those taxes were approximately 0.90% of the home's value. In Muscogee, the average resident paid 0.56% of their home's value, or an average of $759 a year.

On the Alabama side of the river, residents in Chambers County paid about $283 a year, according to the study. That's much lower compared to their southerly neighbors in Lee County, where the average resident pays $726 a year.

In our area, Harris County residents are estimated to pay the most in yearly property tax. According to the report, those residents pay an estimated $1,577 a year.
