CULLOWEE, N.C. -

A Western Carolina University student has drowned in the Tuckasegee River.

The Jackson County sheriff's office is investigating the drowning of 18-year-old Timothy Michael Adams.

Chief Deputy Chip Hall said Adams was pronounced dead at Med West Hospital on Saturday.

Investigators say Adams was swimming with friends when the accident occurred. Hall says deputies are still trying to determine what happened.

The Cullowhee Fire Department, Med West EMS and the Jackson County Rescue Squad responded and tried to revive Adams.

A school spokesman said Adams was a freshman from Raleigh who was majoring in sports management.
