Georgia man to plead in dog fighting case

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -

An 11th person is planning to plead guilty in a dog-fighting investigation that stretched from Texas to Georgia. Edward Duckworth of suburban Atlanta filed court papers Monday in Montgomery, Alabama, saying he wants to plead guilty. A federal judge is scheduled to take his plea Wednesday.

Ten other defendants from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas have already pleaded guilty and are scheduled for sentencing in August.

"These defendants were betting between $5,000 and $200,000 on one dog fight," U.S. Attorney George L. Beck Jr. said in August 2013 after news of the case broke.

The investigation started three years ago by the Auburn Police Department and ultimately resulted in the recovery of more than 400 dogs.

It is believed to be 2nd largest dog fighting raid in U.S. history, behind when authorities seized nearly 500 dogs in Missouri and four and surrounding states in 2009. That case became known as the "Missouri 500."
