Phenix City adding more red light cameras

Posted: Updated:
PHENIX CITY, Ala. -

Phenix City has added two new red light cameras.

The city recently installed cameras at two intersections: Crawford Road and 17th Avenue; and Summerville Road and Stadium Drive. The city now operates three cameras after installing their first camera at Broad Street and 13th Street last year.

In May a WRBL News 3 investigation found crashes had decreased at the intersection of Broad Street and 13th Street since the camera's installation. There were 50 crashes in the year before the camera went up and 32 crashes the year after, a 36% reduction in crashes.

Opelika also operates four red light cameras. Columbus decided in 2011 to pass on a proposal to install such cameras out of concerns the city would lose money operating the network.

In Opelika and Phenix City, a driver will be fined $100 if caught on camera running a red light.
