DURHAM, N.C. -

A 36-year-old woman was indicted by a Durham County Grand Jury Tuesday on charges related to the April shooting death of her 9-year-old son.

Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Macon Street April 28 around 9:40 p.m. in reference to a shooting. When they arrived, officers found 9-year-old Christian Pittman, who had died from an apparent gunshot wound.

The boy’s mother Amy Suzanne Pittman, 36, of Durham, was indicted on one count of voluntary manslaughter, three counts of felony child abuse – gross negligence, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of failure to store firearms to protect minors, authorities said.

An investigation into the incident revealed it was an accident, police said.

Durham police said three children were home alone at the time of the shooting.

Police said Amy Pittman is not currently in custody.

Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez stressed the importance of locking up guns inside homes following Christian Pittman’s death.

The incident on Macon Street not only underscores the importance of responsible gun ownership, but painfully demonstrates the irreversible, adverse effects when practical gun safety measures are not put into practice," Lopez said. "Safety must be a priority when there are firearms in the home. Be sure to keep them secured and away from children.
