The principal of a private Quaker school in Orange County says he has received more reports of sexual abuse that allegedly occurred in the 1970s.

Last month, Carolina Friends Schools Principal Mike Hanas told the school's community about complaints made by former students who accused a past principal and a former teacher of inappropriately touching them.

On Wednesday, Hanas said he had received additional reports of abuse that may have occured in the '70s.

Carolina Friends School, a private pre-K to grade 12 Quaker school in Durham, said it learned in 2012 that several former students alleged their were sexually abused by former principal Harold Jernigan between 1969 and 1975.

One of the former students also said they were inappropriately touched in the spring of 1976 by Charles William Butcher, who was a former middle school teacher.

The school said the former students claimed they were abused in their lower and middle school years.

Carolina Friends School said it reached out to both Jernigan and Butcher, but only Butcher responded to inquiries.

A day after the school said Butcher admitted to inappropriately touching students and committed to participating in the reconciliation process for the students he may have harmed, Butcher took his own life. He was 71 years old.

Carolina Friends School was founded in 1962 by members of the Religious Society of Friends.
