Purse snatchers caught after getting stuck in Fayetteville traffic

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

 Two men were taken into police custody when they got stuck in traffic while trying to run from Fayetteville police.

Police said Ethan Mitchell, 18, and Tyrique Jerome Sharpless, 21, stole an 82-year-old woman’s purse as she was about to enter the Carlie C’s located at 600 Cedar Creek Road. The two men left the scene in a red Pontiac Sunfire.

Soon after, Fayetteville police officers saw the suspect’s vehicle in the area of Clinton Road and Dunn Road.

Mitchell and Sharpless led police on a brief chase until they got caught in traffic on Person Street near S. Eastern Boulevard, police said. They were taken into custody without incident.

Mitchell was charged with two counts larceny from the person, two counts possession of stolen goods, two counts felonious conspiracy, obtaining property by false pretense and possession of a weapon of mass destruction (altered rifle), police said.

Sharpless was charged with two counts larceny from the person, two counts possession of stolen goods and two counts felonious conspiracy, police said.

Fayetteville police also determined Mitchell and Sharpless were involved in a larceny July 7 that took place at the ATM at the same Carlie C’s parking lot.

Mitchell and Sharpless are being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center. Mitchell is held under a $175,000 secured bond.

Sharpless is being held on a $125,000 secured bond, police said.
