Columbus church collecting school supplies for those in need

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

A Columbus church is helping the community by gathering school supplies and providing a safe environment for young people. Cathedral of Prayer hosted their yearly Youth Jam Back to School Bash, Saturday.

"To show the children you don't have to do what other people do," said Dr. Gloria Rodgers.

It's the message Pastor Gloria Rodgers wants to spread to youth across the Columbus community and it's the focus of the Cathedral of Prayer yearly Youth Jam.

"There are people who will embrace you. Love you, not abuse you, but love you. Teach you there's a better way," said Rodgers.

Some Columbus teens got the chance to share inspirational spoken word during Saturday's Youth Jam.

"Some people think that kids don't go through things. Well we do," said 14 year old Iyonhia Washington.

Iyonhia Washington is a freshman at Hardaway High School. She says this type of event helps keep her and her friends away from trouble.

"I think it's really important for people in the community to come together and praise God, not even just praise God but to have fun because there are so many kids and people dying now and this can keep us from dying," said Washington.

The yearly event is also designed to collect school supplies for those in need.

"Trying to get book bags and supplies for the children. As many as possible and we will give those out a week before school and that will be for the community also," said Rodgers.

If you would like to donate supplies, you can contact the Cathedral of Prayer church at 706-322-2086.
