Gene Jelks returns to Legion Field

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, AL - The journey for former Alabama running back Gene Jelks has been a tough one.

But Jelks returned to Birmingham and Legion Field today to hold a youth football camp.

In 1992, Jelks said he received benefits during his time at the University of Alabama, and someone with ties to Auburn University paid him to come forward.

Jelks says he's happy to be back at Legion Field.

"It brings back great memories to be back," Jelks said. "Not only that especially I'm able to come back not in uniform but come back and represent Jesus Christ. It's great feeling to be back home."

So how has Jelks been received by Bama fans?

"I have been received (with) open arms by 85% of the people. There's going to be some critics out there who will never forgive me," Jelks said.

"I was gone for the University of Alabama for like three years when this scandal hit. It was between Alabama and Auburn. I just hope they leave me out of it and let me come back home."
