GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Things quickly went from bad to worse for the Johnson City Cardinals Friday night in Greeneville. The Cardinals gave up eight runs in the final four innings of an 8-3 loss, then they were abandoned by their bus driver.
After falling to the Astros, the team driver decided the players were taking too long to shower and get ready, so he put the bus keys in his pocket and left the squad 45 minutes away from its home at Cardinal Park.
The game, at Greeneville's Pioneer Park, ended around 9:55 PM Friday night. Once the team got ready, they loaded onto the bus, and it was then that the driver made his dramatic departure, leaving them in the dark of the bus wondering what was going on.
The driver, angered because he had to drive to Oklahoma Saturday morning, had his wife pick him up.
A replacement driver showed up a little after 11:30 PM to drive the team back to Johnson City.
Adding insult to injury, the loss on the field was the fifth straight for the previously first place Cardinals.
