Jury selection begins in Duke grad student's murder trial

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. - The trial for a man accused of killing a Duke University graduate student more than six years ago began Monday.

Laurence Lovette Jr. is charged with murder in the 2008 death of Abhijit Mahato.

Lovette is serving a life prison sentence for the 2008 shooting death of Eve Carson of Athens, Georgia, who was student body president at the University of North Carolina.

Mahato was found dead in his off-campus apartment in Durham.

Defense attorneys argued Monday that they don't want Eve Carson's name brought up during jury selection or opening statement because they think it could impact Lovette's ability to get an impartial jury. The judged allowed the motion.

The judge revealed Monday that Lovette also turned down a plea offer from the state. He is facing a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder of Carson.

Lovette was arrested eight days after Carson's death, and police investigators said they connected him to Mahato's death.
