Bomb dogs, handlers train in Columbus

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Muscogee County Sheriff's Office is hosting the annual Explosive Detection K-9 Training this week. About 30 bomb dogs and their handlers have traveled here from all across Georgia.

They go through different scenarios- including one that mimicked the Boston Marathon Bombing. After a small explosion, the dogs were sent in to find two other explosive training aids. When the dog finds an explosive odor- they'll either sit or lay down and then they’re rewarded with a toy.

Another scenario involved luggage- handlers say many of their calls involve bags left behind which they will check out to make sure it's safe.

This is the first year Columbus has been chosen to host the training.
