SEC Media Days: Auburn embracing role of favorites

Posted: Updated:
Gus Malzahn knew he would have to address his team's situation at quarterback at SEC Media Days. Nick Marshall's marijuana incident was the teams' second drug problem in two weeks.

The last year and a half, we have had one of the cleaner programs in all of college football. The last two weeks we have had two situations. We are going to deal with those situations,” Malzahn said.

Even beyond dealing with problems off the field, the Tigers have had to live with coming 13 seconds short of a national championship. It's a defeat that continues to fuel them.

Saying we lost the national championship, that fire is still there burning. It's up to us to really get it back into a fiery sensation as last season was,” said defensive tackle Gabe Wright.

That fiery sensation on defense will be led by Gabe Wright. We asked the Carver alum who he is ready to hit hardest this season.

“Besides all the quarterbacks in the SEC?  Todd Gurley. He slipped by me. I slipped. He scored. But, I'll let him have it,” Wright said.

But, the Tigers are a little more relaxed publicly after having a phenomenal 2013. But, for Gus Malzahn, it may have little to do with football.

“My wife tells me I need to liven up my personality a little bit. Maybe that has something to do with it,” Malzahn said.

The players get to see a different side of the normally meticulous head coach.

God, he is goofy. When you talk to him, I don't know, he doesn't know his humor as much. He is a really funny guy. He doesn't laugh when he makes jokes which makes it a little bit funnier,” said tight end CJ Uzomah.

They may be jolly this offseason, but the focus is there in the form of their team motto this year: tough and together.
