Spurrier spouts off at SEC Media Days

Posted: Updated:
One of the most entertaining parts about SEC media days is the Ole Ball Coach. Steve Spurrier made the rounds in Hoover Tuesday.

You don't have to work hard to get an opinion out of Steve Spurrier. He is one of the more open and honest figures in the SEC. That's why he admitted his side of the conference is weaker than the West.

I think all of us in the East admit that those teams are a little stronger the last four or five years. Not always. The last several years, that side is hard to win,” Spurrier said.

There is one team in particular that Spurrier has been noticing because of their successful option run game.

“Obviously, Auburn, Gus and his guys do it better than anybody. The way they were able to run the ball up and down the field was truly amazing,” said Spurrier.

Spurrier had thoughts on Alabama too. He is impressed that Nick Saban got a new contract where he makes seven million dollars a year.

“He is an excellent negotiator. I said that about Kevin Sumlin too.He played that Texas deal pretty well. You have to give him credit. He is worth it. He is worth all of that,” Spurrier said. “Probably more.”

But, none of that made the Ole Ball Coach smile more than when questions were over and he saw his former quarterback Stephen Garcia among the hoards of media.

“Alright, Stephen's here! When I saw you on tv last night, Rick Henry was interviewing you, I said, did he join the media or did he join Duck Dynasty?,” said Spurrier.

Coach Spurrier says he is excited about his new quarterback Dylan Thompson. He said he won't run as much as Stephen Garcia did.

It's kind of an odd road trip in the middle of the season for the Auburn Tigers. They play Thursday night at Kansas State. It will be their first game this year against a ranked opponent.
