Jack Kingston visits Columbus, talks jobs

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Congressman Jack Kingston, who will face David Perdue in a Georgia senate primary runoff Tuesday, visited Columbus on Thursday.

During his visit with local leaders Thursday, Kingston talked about the importance of removing government roadblocks to economic growth. It comes the same day Georgia's unemployment numbers were released. Those numbers show a climb to 7.4 percent in the unemployment rate in June from the 7.2 percent rate in May. Kingston says the number one thing that's holding back jobs is regulatory overreach. He say's he'll work to unleash the private sector if elected. He also touched on the more than 10,000 proposed job cuts on Fort Benning.

"Make sure that not only Benning remains vibrant and viable but that the whole Columbus, Muscogee area will sustain whatever reductions there might be out there," said Kingston.

Kingston also focused on domestic energy saying we need to develop North American energy so the country can become an energy exporting country. He advocated finishing the controversial keystone oil pipeline in the United States.

Kingston will be facing off against former Dollar General CEO David Perdue during the run off election next week. Both are vying to fill the open Georgia U.S. senate seat vacated by Saxby Chambliss. The winner of next week's election will face off against Democrat Michelle Nunn in November for the seat.
