Attorney: Phenix City school board action unusual

Posted: Updated:

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) - An attorney for Alabama's association of school boards says she would not have advised the Phenix City school board to ask two of its members to leave a closed session.

Alabama Association of School Boards general counsel Jayne Harrell Williams said she's never heard of such a situation in her 13 years of practicing school board law.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports ( that the board voted to go into a closed session to discuss two issues during its July 8 meeting: "The good name and character" of an individual and pending legislation.

The newspaper reports that after discussing the first issue, school board President Brad Baker asked board members Barbara Mitchell and Zara Parham to leave the room and not participate in the discussion of the pending litigation.
