Columbus firefighters win Headquarter Nissan Athletes of the Week

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

For the past several years, the Columbus Firefighters Association and Columbus Fire and EMS has put on the Firefighter MDA 5K to raise funds and bring awareness to muscular dystrophy.

But for the 2014 version, they took it a step further, and for that, they are the Headquarter Nissan Athletes of the Week.

You see, this year, the firefighters ran/walked the race as normal, but 11 of them did so wearing their full turnout gear. The gear includes boots, jacket, pants, helmet, mask and breathing apparatus, and can weigh as much as 100 pounds.

“It was a tough event, but we had a lot of fun,” said firefighter Tim Farley. “Great bunch of guys and females got together from the fire department, and it was a good turnout. Hopefully next year, we get a bigger crowd.”

It wasn’t just the big guys that took the challenge. The slight-of-stature were included as well.

“It was a challenge,” said firefighter Anne Land. “It was definitely worth it. It was an honor to be a part of it.”

“That gear is very heavy,” said division fire chief Ricky Shores. “It tends to radiate heat back on the body. Just being able to walk that distance in that type of gear really speaks to their determination.”

And the best part of the whole thing?

The money raised stays in the local area.

It's kind of an odd road trip in the middle of the season for the Auburn Tigers. They play Thursday night at Kansas State. It will be their first game this year against a ranked opponent.
