OPELIKA, Ala. -  An upcoming Opelika High School senior has been charged with murder after the shooting death of a 17-year-old on Edmon Avenue Monday afternoon, Opelika Police Department Captain Shane Healey said.

Vantavious Quintez, 17, of Opelika, is accused of shooting Alizah Ellis, also 17, of Opelika, around 12:50p ct in the 500 block of Edmon Avenue Monday, according to Healey. Responding officers located Ellis and had him transported to the East Alabama Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries during surgery around 3p ct Monday.

A warrant was issued for Quintez's arrest and police say he was in custody by 6p ct.

Under Alabama law, an individual that is under the age of 18 may be charged as an adult if they commit a violent felony," Healey said in a statement to WRBL News 3. "Therefore, the offender in this case is being charged as an adult and that is why he was booked into the Lee County Detention Center."

Police did not initially say what  caused the shooting but are asking for the public's help as the investigation continues.

"We are all a part of the Opelika Community and it will take the community to clear up all the questions in this tragic event," Healey said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Alfred White with the Opelika Police Department Investigative Services Division at (334)705-5220 or the Secret Witness Hotline at (334)745-8665.

This is Opelika first murder since March of 2013. At the time, police were investigating their second murder of the year.
