CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -

Members of the military were awarded for their service Wednesday.

Seven Marines and a Sailor were awarded Purple Heart medals in a ceremony at Camp Lejeune. They received the medals for wounds received in actions against the enemy during a recently deployment to Afghanistan.

"I'm about to get out of the Marine Corps, and there are a lot of benefits for the Purple Heart back in Tennessee,” said Sgt. Kyle Edwards, Purple Heart recipient. “That is reassuring to know that my family and myself will be taken care of benefit wise from receiving this award."

The VA describes the Purple Heart as one of the most recognized and respected medals awarded to member of the U.S. armed forces.
