Carver looking to make waves in new region

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Carver Tigers will have a whole new slate of region opponents in 2014 as a member of region 1-AAAAA.

Carver previously played in the GHSA’s AAA classification.

The region contains fellow Muscogee County schools Columbus, Hardaway, Northside and Shaw, as well as Harris County and LaGrange.

“I think it’s good,” said MCSD athletics director Todd Stanfill. “It puts a lot more emphasis onto the rivalry. I think our schools line up well for it. We’ve got five teams in AAAAA and three teams (Jordan, Kendrick, Spencer) in AAA. [It] puts everybody in a pretty good position.”

Carver will be hungry after falling to Buford in the state quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.

“I’m very hungry, anxious,” said senior center K.J. Johnson. “As soon as we lost to Buford last year, the next week we were in the weight room working hard, all the way to spring. Spring practice [we] went at it, got better, now summertime and we’re getting extra better.”

For the Tigers to succeed, they’ll lean heavily on two of the brightest high school prospects in the region. Junior quarterback Jawon Pass has offers from virtually every SEC school, and senior defensive end Mekhi Brown has already committed to Alabama.

After a breakout sophomore campaign, Brown was quiet in his junior season thanks to some extra attention from opponents.

“Last year, I had a lot of pressure on me,” he said. “Folks expected me to do too much. They didn’t realize teams went away from me a whole lot, so I really couldn't do what I did my sophomore year. I feel like I just have to keep playing hard and just, don't get mad about it, really. Just keep playing."

Head coach Joe Kegler, entering his second season, shows no signs of nerves or increased expectations.

“Just ready to get after it,” he said. “Kids have been working hard this summer. [I’m] anxious to see how it’s going to look when we put pads on.”

Carver opens the season Saturday, Aug. 23, against Carver-Atlanta.

It's kind of an odd road trip in the middle of the season for the Auburn Tigers. They play Thursday night at Kansas State. It will be their first game this year against a ranked opponent.
