Tax-free weekend kicks off today in Alabama and Georgia

Posted: Updated:

More than a dozen states are offering sales-tax-free shopping this month. Starting Friday - both Alabama and Georgia kick off their sales tax holiday.

About 30 to 40 shoppers lined up at Best Buy on Manchester Expressway in Columbus before the store opened for what some call the second biggest shopping season of the year.

“I love shopping,” says Jackie Hall. Hall is just one of the many shoppers that lined the aisles at Best Buy to take advantage of the tax-free weekend.

She came all the way from Mississippi to buy a new tablet as she prepares to go back to college this month.

“The tablets more convenient- I can put it in my purse and carry it around,” she says.

The National Retail Federation says consumers will spend an average of $669 on back-to-school shopping.

In Georgia, the tax exemption applies to computers and software worth less than $1,000, clothes and shoes worth less than $100, and school supplies worth less than $20.

“They're shopping because for one- they're saving the tax and then we have great saving prices as well on top of that- so they feel it's a great weekend to get all their shopping out of the way,” says Peter Khun the General Manager at Best Buy.

Officials expect shoppers to save $2 billion in Georgia alone on back to school and college savings.
